A popular tourist destination and a hub of innovation, Chattanooga has landed on numerous national “best of” lists for its scenic beauty, outdoor activities, urban amenities, growing economy, affordable living, and great quality of life. 

Another one of the city’s (underrated, but no less impressive) drawing cards is its excellent selection of public and private schools. 

Chattanooga boasts a wide variety of schools that are known for their strong academic programs, dedicated educators, and supportive communities, and ten of the best are located near five of GreenTech’s award-winning communities.

Here they are (in no particular order):

Chattanooga High School Center for Creative Arts 

Located near Northwind, a low-maintenance, urban hideaway in North Chattanooga, Chattanooga High School Center for Creative Arts is a unique, dedicated fine arts magnet school promoting academic and artistic excellence for students in grades six through 12. Part of the Hamilton County School System, CCA’s college preparatory academic emphasis of the school is propelled by a commitment to the arts as a vehicle to foster creativity, cultivate discipline, and build ensemble.

This exemplary all-boys boarding institution serving grades six through 12 is a few streets down from Burnside, an enclave of townhomes, restaurants, and a fully restored, mixed-use 100-year-old warehouse located in Chattanooga’s historic Southside. McCallie is known for its academic excellence, leadership development, and character education. With strong athletics, vibrant extracurriculars, and a beautiful campus, McCallie offers a well-rounded education that prepares young men for future success.

Girls Preparatory School

Also near Northwind, Girls Preparatory School — more commonly referred to as GPS — excels in providing a top-tier education for young women, emphasizing academic rigor, leadership, and personal growth. GPS maintains a formal coordinate program with McCallie, and students at the two schools participate in a variety of organized social events and some coordinated academic programming.

STEM School Chattanooga

A few minutes down Highway 153 from Painted Ridge, a new pocket community of single-family homesites, STEM School Chattanooga is a public high school that provides problem-based learning curriculum design aligned with Tennessee's state standards with a focus on sciences, technology, engineering, mathematics, and the arts. 

Normal Park Museum Magnet School

The K-8 Normal Park Museum Magnet School has been recognized on the local and national levels for its innovative, museum-based curriculum that fosters creativity and critical thinking. Also located near Northwind, Normal Park is staffed by dedicated teachers who form a supportive environment that offers a dynamic learning experience.

The Baylor School

Just minutes away from Normal Park, the Baylor School serves grades six through 12 — including boarding students from grade nine and up — with rigorous academics, exceptional faculty, and strong emphasis on character development. Baylor provides as much variety in its activities and extracurricular offerings as it does within its robust academic program, which offers students an outstanding college preparatory curriculum and selection of advanced studies.

Chattanooga School for the Liberal Arts

Minutes from the sprawling and serene landscapes of Hamilton on Hunter, the Chattanooga School for the Liberal Arts (CSLA) is a top-ranked magnet school known for its high proficiency scores in both math and reading. With an innovative focus on personalized learning, CSLA  offers a well-rounded K-9 education​ featuring a robust curriculum emphasizing critical thinking, creativity, and academic excellence. 

Silverdale Baptist Academy 

This bold and thriving multi-denominational institution offers a carefully crafted college-preparatory program from preschool through grade 12 to help students foster a love for learning, serving others, and providing leadership in today’s ever-changing world. Silverdale is minutes from Heritage Walk, an urban-inspired community in the heart of East Brainerd that blends modern craftsmanship with old-world charm. 

Notre Dame High School

Also near Burnside, Notre Dame High School provides advanced faith-based educational programs, athletics, arts, student organizations, and more that allow each student to reach their full potential. Students can participate in STEM curriculum, advanced placement classes, advanced college-preparatory classes, honors-college preparatory classes, and dual enrollment classes.

Chattanooga School for the Arts & Sciences 

Located across the street from the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga and just minutes from Northwind, Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences (CSAS) has the distinction of being the first magnet school in the district, and the only magnet school within Hamilton County offering a K-12 education. CSAS was founded on the belief that all students can learn at high levels, and all of the school’s high school core classes are honors-level classes are taught at this rigorous level.
