Neighborhood Spotlight: The Northshore

Where are some of the best neighborhoods in Chattanooga? Join us as we look at a few of the most popular destinations for home buyers throughout the Tennessee Valley.

Positioned on the north side of the Tennessee River, across from Chattanooga’s revitalized riverfront, the Northshore has seen a revitalization of its own over the past three decades.

Once viewed as “the other side of the tracks,” the bright and bustling Northshore has become one of the city’s biggest tourist draws, as well as one of the most popular neighborhoods for young professionals and young families.

Here’s a quick overview of why so many people are flocking there.

Location

The Northshore is connected to downtown by four bridges, including the Market Street Bridge and the historic Walnut Street Bridge, one of the longest pedestrian-only bridges in the world. In addition to crossing the river by car or by foot, you can also access either shore by bike — including a bike from Bike Chattanooga — and free electric shuttle. The neighborhood is also close to Highway 27, I-24, and I-75, providing easy access to the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport, as well as Nashville, Atlanta, Birmingham, and Knoxville.

Schools

The Northshore boasts several acclaimed public and private schools. Elementary students attend Rivermont, Red Bank, and Normal Park Museum Magnet Lower School. Older students attend Normal Park Museum Magnet Upper School and Red Bank Middle and High Schools. Private schools in the area include Girls Preparatory School, Notre Dame High School, St. Jude School, St. Peter’s Episcopal School, the Bright School, the Montessori School, Baylor School, and McCallie School. The Northshore is also home to the Chattanooga High School Center for Creative Arts magnet school.

Dining

No other part of the city can match the collective variety, quality, and quantity of fantastic food and drink options that can be found on the Northshore. Start your day with breakfast and coffee at Aretha Frankenstein’s or Mean Mug Coffeehouse, then grab an authentic New York-style deli lunch at River Street Deli before exploring the rest of the Northshore’s delicious options. Bela Lisboa offers Portuguese and Mediterranean-inspired cuisine. Enjoy hibachi and sushi rolls at Sushi Nabe or Totto Sushi Bar & Grille. Try Taco Mamacita’s unique taco, enchilada, and margarita options. In the mood for rustic, relaxed Italian cuisine? Stevarino’s is the spot. Food Works is the Northshore’s headquarters for home-cooking and comfort food. Want to top things off with some artisanal ice cream, specialty desserts, or other sweet treats? Swing by Clumpie’s Ice Cream, Milk & Honey, or Julie Darling Donuts.

Shopping

Anchored by one of only two Whole Foods grocery stores in Chattanooga, the 2 North Shore plaza features a convenient blend of boutiques and local shopping options. Frazier and Cherokee avenues offer one-of-a-kind shopping, including everything from couture to the latest in streetwear and footwear, accessories, fine art, and vintage collectibles. Browse Plum Nelly’s wide variety of fine items, including jewelry, dinnerware, art, and hand-blown glassware. Browse the books, toys, music, and folk art at Winder Binder Mercantile. Find the perfect little gift at Blue Skies. Round the corner on North Market, you’ll find Walgreens, Publix, and more retail options in between.

The Arts

The Northshore is filled with art, from public art pieces like the Blue Rhino and Brick Piano to the galleries along Frazier Avenue. The Chattanooga Theatre Centre produces several annual productions and offers a variety of acting classes and workshops. The Chattanooga Symphony presents its annual patriotic “Pops on the River” concert at Coolidge Park every July, and the park is home to other popular concerts and festivals throughout the year.
